Blog Entry #5

I personally really enjoyed the Card Strategy Lesson. It was definitely a different way of brainstorming for me. Usually I just write a list and call it a day but I was able to write down all of my thoughts the spread them out in front of me. Then the part I really enjoyed the most was taking out the 11 most important and putting them in sequential order.

I was talking with my partner when we were working together to see if we could figure out the correct order and I just was saying how I really liked this approach. Not only was it a really good brainstorming method but also I felt like I had my whole outline right in front of me. This made it so easy when we started to free write because I had my cards in my hand and I was able to just keep flipping them when I was done with that topic.

Another thing that made it so easy was that I have experience in this topic. I chose this topic because I have depression and anxiety. This made it also a lot easier for me to brainstorm because I was able to think about my experience with it and how it makes me feel. I also got to think about the different ways I could help depression and anxiety.

This is definitely a brainstorming strategy I can see myself using in the future for sure. I really enjoyed putting down the topics on cards and then being able to put the into order. This is so much easier than an outline as well. Another thing that I could do is write details I know about the topic on the back of the card where is says the topic. I just know that I really enjoyed this brainstorming strategy. It was so different and something that helped me a lot especially being such a hands on learner.

If I end up teaching students who are a bit older. I could potentially see myself doing this brainstorming strategy with them as well. This is something that could help them write and brainstorm their thoughts on cards and then be able to eliminate what's not as important. After that they will be able to put them in order as an outline and I think it'll help them as well. So all in all I REALLY ENJOYED THIS.

  1. Taylor, I really appreciate your reflection on your own use of the card strategy here. I wondered... when you say, teaching students who are a bit older"...who did you have in mind? Could you see ways you could model this strategy or guide a whole class of students "who are a bit younger" to see how they could share their thinking collectively?
