Blog Entry #11
Well here it is! The poetry week which is what I am presenting in for my genre expert presentation. So needless to say, I LOVED everything about Tompkins this week. I am a poetry fanatic whether I'm reading it or writing it, I just love it.
The best thing about poetry is it can have any mood you want, poems can be happy, sad, scary, etc. They can make you feel any way the poet wants you to feel. They can also have messages that aren't hidden or they can have very deep secretive messages that you can only figure out if you dissect the whole poem. This is why poetry is so fun! There is just so much you can do with it.
Poems can rhyme or they can tell a story, they can just be one word a stanza or full sentences. It's almost as if it's a free for all. Another thing that is so fun about poetry are all the different types of poetic devices. We have alliteration, which is using the same beginning letter throughout the whole poem. We also have repetition where some phrases are repeated to emphasize the meaning. My favorite one which I love so much is just because the name is so fun to say is onomatopoeia, BOOM BAM WHAM POW! There are so many more poetic devices but these are just a few fun ones!
Poetry helps with phonemic awareness, students can hear the rhyming sounds of words. It can also help with reading fluency as well as expression. Poetry can engage and motivate students who may be struggling readers, it gives them the opportunity to be creative. The best thing about poetry is it is personal and can be as creative as anyone wants it to be. It can be about anything possible and this is a way for students to be able to express themselves or maybe incorporate their interests.
It is also very important for students to read poems aloud both rhyming and non rhyming. Poems have a rhythm to them. This can also helps students fluency and vocabulary development as well when reading different rhyming words.
Poetry doesn't have all the rules that a story has to follow or a letter has to follow. It can be a formal or informal thing and like I said before one word stanzas are even a thing as well. It is amazing to see all the different things we can do with poetry and all the different types of poetry there is out there.
Taylor, this is a great reflection on what you know. I am wondering though, what readings helped you to come to these new conclusions?
